If you are building an apparel brand, one of the first and most critical decisions you will make is choosing your fabric. Yet, many emerging brand founders fall into the trap of oversimplifying material selection. They believe a simple binary rule: "Natural fibers like pure cotton are premium and eco-friendly, while synthetic fibers like polyester are cheap and inferior."
As a sportswear and streetwear manufacturer based in Guangzhou, Honfit works with brands across both premium and budget markets. In the modern textile factory, there is no such thing as a "low-end" or "high-end" fiber — every fiber has a specific biological or chemical structure designed to perform a distinct role. Some of the most expensive high-tech apparel on the market is made of engineered synthetics.
Here is our factory-floor guide to the 12 most common apparel fabric compositions.
Part 1: The Synthetic Powerhouses
Synthesized from petrochemical raw materials, these fibers are highly stable, incredibly durable, and capable of being engineered into almost any physical form.
1. Polyester
Factory Insight: The most versatile fiber on Earth. It can be extruded into microfibers, woven for windproof outdoor gear, or engineered into X-shapes/O-shapes for rapid moisture-wicking. Recycled polyester (rPET) from post-consumer plastic bottles is actually a premium material with significant cost.
Best For: Activewear, outerwear, hoodies, sports jerseys.
2. Nylon / Polyamide
Factory Insight: The king of durability. Its structural strength actually improves when wet — which is why it is the default choice for swimwear and extreme outdoor apparel.
Best For: Sun-protective clothing, windbreakers, mountaineering gear, swimwear.
3. Acrylic
Factory Insight: "Artificial wool." Mimics the crimped structure of natural wool to trap air pockets, offering high thermal retention at a fraction of wool's cost.
Best For: Sweaters, winter knitwear, thermal underwear linings.
4. Spandex / Elastane
Factory Insight: Never used alone — blended in small percentages (2–20%) to give fabrics stretch and recovery. Premium Lycra offers superior durability.
Best For: Yoga wear, leggings, underwear, fitted garments.
Part 2: The Regenerated Cellulosics
Made by dissolving natural raw materials (wood, bamboo) in a chemical solvent and spinning the cellulose back into textile fibers.
5. Viscose / Rayon
Factory Insight: Moisture absorption 50% higher than pure cotton — exceptionally breathable and naturally anti-static.
Best For: Summer dresses, premium linings, thermal base layers.
6. Modal
Factory Insight: Second-gen regenerated cellulose from beech wood. Maintains outstanding strength when wet — viscose's key weakness solved.
Best For: High-end underwear, loungewear, premium t-shirts.
7. Lyocell / Tencel
Factory Insight: Third-gen. Sourced from pine wood, manufactured in a closed-loop process recycling 99.7% of solvents — one of the most eco-friendly fibers on the market.
Best For: Premium eco collections, high-end bedding, luxury activewear.
8. Acetate & Triacetate
Factory Insight: Mimics silk's luster, drape, and cool hand-feel. Elite triacetate (Japanese-made) offers superior wrinkle resistance.
Best For: Evening gowns, luxury suit linings, premium trench coats.
Part 3: The Heritage Naturals
9. Cotton
Factory Insight: Premium brands use long-staple cotton (Xinjiang, Pima) for finer, smoother yarns. Raw cotton needs intensive chemical processing — caustic soda baths, PVA sizing glue, silicone softeners — before it's retail-ready.
Best For: Everyday t-shirts, denim, casual wear, loungewear.
10. Silk
Factory Insight: Mulberry silk (indoor-reared) is the gold standard — white, lustrous, fine. Tussah silk (wild) is coarser and more affordable.
Best For: Luxury shirts, pajamas, scarves, high-end dresses.
11. Linen
Factory Insight: Unparalleled breathability in hot climates. Pure linen is rigid — modern factories blend it with cotton, viscose, or polyester to soften the hand-feel.
Best For: Summer resort wear, relaxed suiting, casual button-downs.
12. Wool & Cashmere
Factory Insight: Cashmere is combed from goat undercoats. Fibers reach 120S–140S thread count — wearable against sensitive skin without the prickle of standard wool.
Best For: Premium winter coats, luxury knitwear, high-end thermal base layers.
The Honfit Decision Framework
The secret to a best-selling garment is blending — combining fibers to cancel weaknesses and amplify strengths.
| Target Category | Ideal Blend | Why It Works |
|---|---|---|
| Performance Activewear | 88% Engineered Poly / 12% Spandex | Micro-wicking, 4-way stretch, durable |
| High-End Underwear | 95% Modal / 5% Spandex | Softer than cotton, anti-bacterial, perfect fit |
| Premium Loungewear | 70% Combed Cotton / 30% Lyocell | Eco-friendly, silky soft, breathable |
| Summer Suiting | 55% Linen / 45% Viscose | Breathable texture, zero rigidity |
